Tips on How to Reduce Your Florida Energy Bill

About this time of year we have received our typical summer time electric bill and I am often asked questions about reducing energy costs. Depending on your Florida utility company, costs for energy can range from $0.11 to $0.14 per KWH.

  1. The most important thing one can do is install a programmable thermostat and learn to properly use it.  The thermostats often have a one to two month payback on investment.
  2. Second, one can install a radiant barrier.  Radiant barriers are a reflective material applied to the underside of the roof in the attic area, reflect energy back through the roof surfaces and reduces heat buildup in the attic area.  A radiant barrier can have a one to two year payback.
  3. Last, a power vent for your attic can also impact your cooling costs.  Power vents are thermostatically controlled and you can even purchase solar powered models which can make installation more cost effective.  Power vents will exhaust hot attic air and reduce cooling costs as well.

Remember before contacting anyone contact your Florida power company as they will perform an energy audit, provide you with the best solutions and most importantly help you pay for the upgrades.
